Captain’s Corner: How to Drink Less (or Not At All)

This topic has come up a lot lately—how can we socialize without drinking? A PR call-out for doctors sparked a great conversation in the GOALszn community. The response from our doctor squad was clear: If you want a drink, go for it. But there's no need to drink just because others are. Here’s some real talk and pro tips:

  • Yan Shi, MD: “Just have a drink if you want one; just don’t have one every day, or 10. YOLO.”

  • Brittni Rodriguez, OD: “We have one life. If I want the glass of wine, I’m going to have it.”

  • Amy M. Zheng, MD: “Order a club soda and always have it in your hand. People are less likely to offer you another drink when your glass is full.

  • Robert Chow, MD: “If you want the look, get a soda water with lime. If you want the taste and look get some non alcoholic beer (athletic) and pour it in a glass. If you don’t care, go out and have fun. It’s a great opportunity to be you and surround yourself with the folks who enjoy your vibe.”

Stephani Dalbesio, our resident restaurateur’s tip: I buy cases of Pellegrino and Topo Chico from Costco. Instead of reaching for a drink at home after a long day, I treat myself to some bubbly water—it feels like a little luxury! 🍾

Hanging Out Without the Bar Scene 🍸🚫

Socializing without a bar can be tough. I recently met a friend at Dunkin' because options were limited. One simple thing I enjoy is taking a walk 🚶‍♀️, though it’s not always practical. New spots like  art cafe, offer unique experiences, and of course, there's always bowling or putt-putt (but how many times do you really want to do that!?). Here are some of my favorite "non-drinking" hangout ideas—most require a good host (or a friend with the right space).

  1. DIY Paint Night 🎨: Skip the paid “paint and sip”—just grab canvases, paint, and a fun theme (nudibranches 🐚, anyone?) and get creative together.

  2. DIY Postcard Night 💌: Make personalized postcards to send to friends. It’s a fun, meaningful way to connect and brighten someone’s day!

  3. Dumpling Night 🥟: Host a dumpling-making session. Fold, stuff, and enjoy fresh dumplings with friends.

#Balance: GOALszn at Happy Hour

Ironically, one of our most successful GOALszn events was a happy hour this past Saturday. While we often have smaller groups getting together for workouts, this time, a larger group showed up 😂. It just goes to show that #Balance really is one of our core values. We encourage all teams to hang out, no matter the activity!
