Is gardening exercise?! You tell us!

Hi hi,

GOALszn is a game to track workouts with friends over a period of time. Our three-month “szn” has officially up—with mixed feelings. Some folks need a break, while others wish each szn could continue forever. 

As captains, we believe that breaks are a necessary part of the growth cycle. Almost on cue, Nikki met with a friend yesterday who recommended the book, When: The Scientific Secrets of Perfect Timing by Daniel H. Pink.

One quote stood out: "Elite performers have something in common: They're really good at taking breaks.

Oop! Gotta love the timing of this quote coming to us 😉

Breaks mean different things to all of us. For Ev, decreasing the intensity of her workout is a break. She still needs to keep up the habit of going to the gym, but she'll give herself a rest by not going as hard some days. 

For Nikki, on rest days she still walks 10K steps a day. That helps achieve a balance between hitting the gym and being active and refreshed. And with Ron, he definitely notices poorer performance when he trains too many days in a row, so he's learned to embrace taking a day off here and there. 

When it comes to running GOALszn, regular breaks make it sustainable for everyone. Scheduling a pause creates more excitement and momentum around each szn, and it lets participants join each time with fresh energy and zero burnout. 

In the meantime, we'll still be here every other week with you guys, and we're launching an intense, six-week, experimental "SprintSzn" starting mid-June.

🪴Speaking of easy-pace activities, the CDC considers gardening exercise. Previously, we excluded gardening from being counted as a workout within szns, but maybe we'll reconsider. What do you think?
