Feeling the Ick? Gym Cleanliness Edition!

Plus: Can pull-ups be the key to shifting your mindset from 'I’m working out' to 'I’m training'?

Let's talk about pull-ups! It seems like lots of women in the groups this szn have a goal to master doing at least one.

Ev's advice to achieve this is to start climbing. If you're afraid of heights, check out Beverley Cheng's advice. (And sorry for the random Google Doc; this appeared in our inboxes as we discussed this topic, but it’s a newsletter exclusive we had to share with you!)

Why pull-ups tho? 

“In short, they are fundamental. Pull-ups are a basic building block of strength training and demonstrate a foundational level of control over your body. I often use them as a prerequisite for more advanced training with my patients. If you can do a pull-up, you’re mastering one of my favorite metrics: the strength-to-bodyweight ratio. Congratulations, you’ve conquered a part of yourself (and gravity)!

I believe pull-ups are especially important for women, as many don’t achieve them naturally. Developing the strength for pull-ups requires specific training, making them an excellent introduction to the next phase of your athletic journey: shifting your mindset from “I’m working out” to “I’m training.” These two concepts are not the same! You might have worked out for years without ever truly training.

If you’re ready to move beyond the basics and embark on a structured program, pull-ups are a great place to begin!”

Ev agrees, and she's kept up with her pull-up game even though she doesn't climb anymore. It also gives her confidence that she could hold her own in a fight … however misguided that confidence may be 😜 

Whatever your reason for wanting to master pull-ups, we think it's an awesome goal to work toward!

One of the best things about friends is how they introduce you to new activities you might never try otherwise. That's how many of us got into climbing, lifting, or skiing! So in honor of our fitness friendships, choose a friend's workout and give it a shot — and tell them about it!
