This past week’s challenge was to discuss your procrastination habits and hacks for working around them. Incorporating discussions about procrastination can help people recognize its impact on general well-being, whether that is through the lens of fitness, mental health or otherwise.

A summary of our “bad” procrastination tendencies:

  • Avoiding tasks by engaging in social interactions

  • Feeling overwhelmed and letting to-do lists grow

  • General avoidance

  • "I'll do it tomorrow" mentality

The hacks we use to help:

My coach recommends moving away from calling every avoidance procrastination, instead identifying why and putting the things i’m avoiding into buckets:

1. It’s not energizing / motivating

2. It’s inferring w me being in other things i love

3. Bad time management

  • Post-it-notes are a must for list-making

  • Accountability to colleagues

  • Breaking tasks into smaller chunks with rewards.

  • Eating the frog

  • Calendar blocking

  • Practicing saying "let me think about it" before committing.

  • Learning from past procrastination-induced consequences.

  • Changing locations for different activities.

I’m trying to learn “Habit stacking.” My professional coach told me to add the things I hate doing before or after habits/things I like to do. The habit stacking formula is “after/before (current habit), I will (new habit). For instance, I hate reading books. She said to start small and told me that before I work out, go to the gym 15-20 mins before the workout and read 1-2 chapters, etc
