Fitfluencers: Users Beware

After sitting at a cafe scrolling TikTok for the better part of an hour–I realized that my scrolling habits are at an all time high. So it’s great I came across Most Fitness Influencers Are Doing More Harm Than Good because it served as a reminder that you can’t believe everything you see. In short, viewers should A) pay attention to how influencers make you feel (avoid ones that increase guilt or body shame!) B) follow influencers with *official credentials* and diverse body representations and c) Find accounts that focus on functional fitness, joy in movement, and inclusivity.

Reminds us of another article we’ve mentioned before, What the Fitness Industry Doesn’t Understand. Shout out to Hampton Liu who is one of our fave influencers to follow.

Speaking of someone having influence, can we talk about Simone Biles for a second? She is 26 (time flies) and still competing at the highest level in gymnastics–where most reach their prime as a teenager. At the 2023 World Artistic Gymnastic Championships, the she became the first female to hit a specific vault move, now named the Biles II internationally. That has to feel super cool having a not only one, but TWO moves named after you. That’s influence done right.
